Term 3—Week 2 28 July 2010
Greetings to all,
I have been listening to radio and doing some reading lately about our growing involvement ( and dependency) on social media. With the increase in technology, there appears to be pitfalls as well as advantages. I understand that people who are heavily into this stuff think it is the best thing since sliced bread and I can see lots of reasons why people want to be involved. I believe Facebook is creating all sorts of mayhem in many people's lives and I feel somewhat saddened by people who have a need to feel they belong to a group and placing themselves at risk of being hugely influenced by the paparazzi mob mentality of a particular group. I can see some parallels with the influence of advertising and marketing in our lives. It will be a huge shame if we turn into a nation of sheep all following the same fads, thoughts, tastes, opinions and fashions. But I guess at the end of the day it is really not much different to the gossip and interaction of the village green? I only hope that users realise that once the words have been put over the media, they cannot be taken back nor challenged by anyone else in the village green until it is too late! Nothing beats authentic face to face communication. Face to face allows us to practise our instincts ( That protective inner voice) about body language and other bits of information which help us function as human beings. Experts say 80% of our information comes from accurately reading body language correctly - a skill which is in increasingly short supply. The theft of identity is closely related to this topic and has only just started here in NZ. . but that is another story. Our children need to be educated about this threat.
Take care
